Beauty in the Beast

SHANE BROX – BEAUTY IN THE BEAST

Step into Shane Brox's enchanting universe of soft, tactile textile sculptures.

His works delve into the journey of returning to an honest, authentic self—the soul that dares to express the feelings we often conceal behind masks and defense mechanisms.

In Queen Sophie's House, the sculptures are presented in a historic building that, after centuries of decay, has been carefully restored and has regained its original splendor. The interaction between the atmosphere of the house and Brox's intuitive sculptures emphasizes the central theme of the exhibition: authenticity as a value and represents aspects of being human, whether playful, scary, joyful, creepy, ugly or beautiful.

A unique sound journey has been created for the exhibition, composed by Andreas Hüttel, which supports the atmosphere, arouses emotions and invites immersion in the historical spaces.

We look forward to sharing this experience with you!

Shane Brox - Beauty in the Beast

Have you ever wondered what would come tumbling out from your true self if you really took down your defences? If you dared to shed your armour, stand emotionally naked and revert to a state of a pre-conditioned and non-judgmental self? This is the on-going process that Shane Brox explores with his ethereal, soft sculptures created from recycled textiles.

To enter Shane Brox’s inner world is to be transported to the mental freedom of another dimension based on instinct, creativity and acceptance. In his works consisting of trippy, comical, creepy or just beautiful creatures, Brox draws on references from both surrealism and psychedelia to folkloric art and plant-like organisms. Sound, sight and vibration play their parts in this otherworld which is an emotional celebration of this inner universe.

The use of the subconscious as a catalyst is a tactic that, among others, is used by the French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, but also by earlier surrealists such as Picasso and Miró in their search for the unspoiled. In his work, Brox consciously uses intuition as a method:

"I find inner peace when I allow myself to follow my artistic impulses without overthinking or self-doubt, when I just dare to create. That is my greatest challenge: simply to be the best version of myself in every moment, both the good and the difficult, and to trust and surrender to the process."

By refusing to give in to fear and by letting go of control, Brox sets the stage for emancipation and that in this liberation one discovers new, genuine aspects of oneself. In Queen Sophie's House, the sculptures are presented in a historic building that, after centuries of decay, has been carefully restored and has regained its original splendor. The interplay between the atmosphere of the house and Brox’s intuitive sculptures emphasizes the exhibition’s central theme: the authentic as a value and represents aspects of being human, whether playful, scary, joyful, sinister, ugly or beautiful. The exhibition thus articulates the strength of the courage to be oneself despite conditional upbringing, other people’s expectations and one’s own ideas, even if it means daring to be honest and show one’s vulnerability.

Andreas Hüttel - Sound revitalisation of body and mind

Sound and music has an extraordinary ability to move us, songs that bring tears to our eyes, rhythms that make us want to dance, and melodies that leave us reflective and still. These moments remind us how sound and frequency can affect us on both physical as well as emotional, shaping our experiences in ways we often can’t put into words.

The soundscape of the exhibition has been composed especially for Beauty in the Beast by Andreas Hüttel. The music is divided into six sequences, which together last approximately 44 minutes. The basic note of each sequence is one of the six original tones of the Solfeggio scale, a series of frequencies first used in Gregorian chants and rediscovered in the mid-20th century. These tones were believed to hold powerful vibrational qualities that could influence our energetic fields, support in processes of physical healing as well as those for emotional and spiritual balance.

New research aligns with this ancient wisdom, revealing groundbreaking insights from cutting-edge sound science. Binaural beats can improve cognitive functions, low-frequency bass tones stimulate relaxation, and certain sound vibrations are even believed to support cellular healing and DNA repair.

In the same way that a poignant song can move us to tears or an uplifting melody can fill us with joy, these frequencies act as catalysts, evoking shifts on a deeper, energetic level.
They remind us that sound is not just something we hear; it’s something we feel - resonating through every part of us, shaping how we connect to ourselves and the world around us.
The soundscape unfolds in six interconnected movements, each attuned to one of the Solfeggio frequencies, that invites you to connect with a specific energetic theme:

1. Liberation (396 Hz) – Releases fear and guilt, creates grounding and strength.
2. Transformation (528 Hz) – Called the “miracle tone”, associated with DNA repair and renewal.
3. Change (417 Hz) – Supports the courage to let go of old patterns and embrace transformation.
4. Expression (741 Hz) – Clears the mind and promotes clarity, authenticity and communication.
5. Balance (639 Hz) – Creates harmony and deeper connection in relationships.
6. Awakening (852 Hz) – Opens to spiritual insight and higher consciousness.

Throughout the exhibition, the music gently leads you towards silence and presence. We invite you to borrow one of the exhibition’s yoga mats, find a spot in the various rooms, lie down, and embark on a journey into your inner self and the unseen forces that surround us.
